Duathlon Du-Molished Hunger LCCM hosted its Second Annual Duathlon on Saturday, May 7, 2011. Similar to a triathlon, competitors ran 5K, biked 14 miles, and finished with another 5K run. The event was sanctioned by USA Triathlon and began and ended at Cedar Crest High School. We were very pleased with the turnout for this second annual event as 58 women and 113 men, for a total of 171 athletes, ranging in age from 12 to 70, registered to compete. Awards were given to the competitors with the best time in eleven different age groups for both the men and women. Adam Webber of Denver, PA came in first for the men (and first overall) by setting a new race record with a time of 1:09:01. Becky Wittrig from Port Matilda, Pa was first among the women with a time of 1:29:13. Our very own David Funk (who also acted as the Race Director) finished first in the Masters Division (over age 40) and fourth overall with a time of 1:18:06. Nancy Sensenig of Wyomissing finished first among the women’s Master Division with a time of 1:37:40. Although the competition was great and the weather was gorgeous, the real winners of this event are the families and individuals we serve on a daily basis. The NET proceeds from this event was over $6000! We would like to thank David Funk and his family: wife, Laurie; son, Tim; and daughter; Sarah, for their tireless efforts in making this event possible. Thank you to our sponsors, Arthur Funk & Sons, Inc; Bouquet Mulligan & DeMaio; Deluxx Bikes; Hammer Nutrition; Barr Associates, Inc.; Tastykake; Swiss Premium Dairy; Ebersole Inc.; Precision Fire Protection; Joe & Sandy Mesics; and Lupine Lighting Systems. A special thank you to the Cornwall Borough and South Lebanon Township Fire Police, First Aid and Safety Patrol, and the many volunteers that protected our competitors throughout the run and bike portions of the race, as well as those that helped setup and tear down. We also thank God for his blessings and protection of all involved. Mark your calendar for next year’s race; tentative date is Saturday, May 5, 2012.
